Packing Day

Packing Day

Packing Day in June 2018

An activity of National and World Mission Support
(Sub-Committee of Uniting Church Adult Fellowship SA Synod Committee)
For 3 days in June, the Uniting Church in Athelstone becomes a hub for collecting, sorting and packing pre-loved and new clothing, manchester, toys and stationery to be sent to remote aboriginal communities across northern and central Australia. This continues a long annual tradition of outreach and mission from churches all around South Australia.

Packing Day update

3-5 June – only 2 weeks away!
Thank you to all those people who have offered to help with Packing Day. We would welcome more people to join us in this worthwhile outreach program – for the whole time or for a few hours.
We will:

  • begin sorting and receiving goods on Sunday June 2
  • be packing and receiving goods on Monday June 3
  • be finalising packing in the morning (and maybe afternoon)on Tuesday June 4

There will be a number of people who will be supporting Packing Day from within our congregation as well as visitors. We would like to offer them Athelstone hospitality and as such will be catering for lunch on the Sunday and Monday and morning /afternoon teas on all days.  Ann Brown has kindly offered to coordinate the catering and is looking for people to make soup and biscuits/slices/cakes. Please contact Ann or catch up with her at church on Sunday if you can help with the catering.
Please see Jayne Nicholas (0418836266) if you have any queries.

Earlier News

After an uncertain start, Packing Day is happening again this year. We will be collecting, sorting and packing on Sunday 3rd, Mon 4th and the morning of Tues 5th June.
Athelstone will again be packing for 4 Northern Territory coastal communities so the majority of our requirements will be summer weight clothing.   However, Men’s, Girls’ and Boys’ jeans and slacks will be suitable. Also light weight jumpers and cardigans for all ages and gender would be appropriate. Other items that can be collected include:
Beanies for all ages.  Manchester (cotton rugs; not heavy woollen blankets or dunas) and Books, sewing aids, toys, toiletries, Good News bibles
Detailed requirements of each of the communities will be on the Noticeboard at the rear of the Church.
We will also collect items for the Old Timers Fete in Alice Springs. Items for the fete must be excellent quality – new handmade or manufactured.
Goods can be dropped at the church on the afternoon of Sunday June 3rd  12 – 4pm and Mon 4th in the morning.
If you are able to help at the church on any of the days ie Sunday, Monday and Tuesday morning please let me know.
Pass the word around to your friends and families for donations, in particular lighter weight garments and plenty of menswear.
Many Thanks, Jayne Nicholas (0418 836 266)
