Sunday 13th May 2018
Greetings and welcome to this week’s newsletter
A Note from Linda
Over recent weeks we have been promoting Spirited Sundays at The Rezz. Our first one is coming up next Sunday (20th May). This is one way that we are actively working on our desire to build connections with our community. We’ll do this by meeting in a space where the community gathers, and offering great speakers, at no cost. We encourage you to join in. All you have to do is come at 6.30, order a meal, take a seat at a table in the Atrium and join in the conversation. I encourage you to also think about who you might be able to invite to come with you – someone who doesn’t normally come to church, someone who might be on the fringe of the church or someone you simply want the opportunity to get to know better. Together you’ll love listening to Kylie speak and sing (at around 7pm). More information, including the menu, can be found in the Events section of our website.
A very Happy Mother’s Day to all the Mums in our church family. Thank you for all you do as a Mother.
We honour all those who ‘mother’ children, whether you are a grandparent, carer or a Dad!
We grieve with all those who miss their Mothers, and for those Mothers who have lost a child.
May this be a day of giving thanks and of fond remembering.
The Prayer Book has been a valued tool for a season. However, there have been a number of concerns raised regarding the use of the book. Following consultation with Church Council, the Worship team and the Pastoral Care Oversight team it has been decided to seek other ways of bringing our petitions to God.
For now then, how will we gather our prayers? We encourage you to increase your use of our Prayer Chain (send an email to, or call Brenton Summers). Please remember that if you are passing on a prayer request for someone else, please check that you have their permission to do so.
Our Worship Leaders will be provided with prayer points as appropriate. They will endeavour not to name individuals as this can and has caused some distress and confusion. If the issue is more personal you are invited to contact Linda or one of the members of the Pastoral Care Oversight team (Brenton Summers, Ann Brown, Bob Stevenson and Linda). We are called to pray for one another, and so we are all encouraged to offer to pray for, or with others, especially if they share a concern with you. (James 5:13-16)
Thanks in anticipation of your flexibility and grace as we make this change. Linda

An enormous thank you to my workplace… After having to extend my sick leave after shoulder surgery I am “on track” with the recovery from shoulder surgery and have returned to work in the office “part- time” from last week. I especially wish to thank Linda , Church Council and the amazing volunteers for covering the admin position. My husband, Fred has recovered miraculously from the stroke, is back driving and living a “normal” life. He is having several sessions of exercise physiology which is the only rehab suggested to enable him to return to the gym with confidence. We wish to thank Athelstone folk for all the prayers, emails, phone calls and practical support we have received over the last 12 weeks. God is truly good! Sharyn
Another Thank You!
Rob Anderson would like to thank everyone for their caring and best wishes when he was in hospital and during his recovery from his knee operation. All visits, phone calls, emails, etc were very much appreciated.
He is progressing well.

Messy Church is a form of church for families that involves creativity, celebration and hospitality. It’s primarily for people who don’t already belong to another form of church. We are exploring offering this once a month on Sunday afternoons. If you are interested in being involved, please contact Linda and you may also like to consider exploring it further through the Messy Church State conference coming up in June:
‘Messy Together’ will be held on Saturday June 2nd from 10am-4pm at The Salvation Army, Tea Tree Gully.

Uniting Church Assembly – Melbourne 8-14 July
We have received a message from our Moderator, Rev Sue Ellis regarding the upcoming 15th Triennial Meeting of the Uniting Church in Australia Assembly, which will be held in Melbourne from 8-14 July, 2018.
The first lot of papers are being released on the Assembly website here https://uniting.church/ including reports relating to marriage and the Royal Commission. The Moderator knows that people have been concerned about the Assembly proposals, conversations and decisions, and how they might affect our congregations and faith communities. With this in mind, she is initiating a series of listening forums. She has invited mission networks to host some of these forums in May and June 2018, and will be inviting other groups to share their thoughts with her as well. The details of these listening forums are still being determined. Further information will be shared through UC e-News and New Times online in the coming weeks. All Uniting Church members are invited to visit the Assembly meeting website and to subscribe for updates. Please keep the Assembly, elected members and Uniting Church leaders in your prayers
