Sunday, 17th December 2017
Greetings and welcome to this week’s newsletter.
A Note from Linda
Here we are already in the 3rd week of Advent! With Christmas falling on a Monday this year, our fourth Sunday of Advent falls on Christmas Eve! That means that the Advent season has been compacted into a shorter time frame and .. it’s almost Christmas!! Have you decided which service or services you will come to? Let me help:
On Wednesday Dec 20, there will a Blue Christmas Service at 7.30pm at Campbelltown Uniting Church. (607 Lower North East Road Campbelltown, parking at the back off Rowney Avenue). This service will be co-hosted by Campbelltown Uniting, Dernancourt Uniting, Resthaven at Paradise and Athelstone Uniting. We will remember those who have died and those left behind, and we will pray for those who find the ‘good cheer’ of the Christmas season hard to find. This will be held on Wednesday 20 December 2017
Here at Athelstone, on Sunday Dec 24 at 9.30am we will have our Advent 4 service where we will light the candle of hope and reflect on Mary’s song of joy.
On Sunday Dec 24 at 6.30pm we will have our Christmas Eve Family service – a fun, interactive and joy-filled celebration of the birth of Christ our Saviour.
On Sunday Dec 24 at 11.00pm we will have our Christmas Eve service, “The Christmas Story” – when we will hear again the story of the first Christmas.
On Monday Dec 25 at 9.30am we will have our Christmas Day service and celebrate the coming of the newborn King.
Of course, all of our services on the 24th and 25th will feature lots of carol singing!
Please consider inviting friends and family members. You are welcome to pick up a few of the Unwrapping Joy flyers in the foyer and pass them on to someone you might like to invite.
Office Closure and housekeeping issues
Please note that Jan and I will be on leave over the holiday season. Subsequently the office will be closed between Friday 22nd December until Thursday 1st February. There will not be a newsletter over this time, Worship services are each Sunday 9.30am, evening services will resume in February. Linda will be on leave from 31st December until Tuesday 30th January. For pastoral concern please contact Brenton Summers 0400 632 829 for assistance.
There will be a message on the answering machine with these dates. Sharyn

December 17 – Third Sunday of Advent:
Sowing seeds is an act of anticipation which should culminate in a joyful harvest. But years of drought left Joyce, a farmer in Zimbabwe, reaping nothing but pain and suffering. Now, thanks to your support through the Christmas Bowl, Joyce has learnt new drought-resistant farming techniques. Please give to the Christmas Bowl today to help other farmers like Joyce feel joy at harvest-time.
Christmas Bowl Appeal
Don’t forget to pick up your Bowl envelope at the door and place your donation in the envelope.
If you want to give by credit card or cheque you may wish to send your donation to the Sydney office ( making sure you write Athelstone UC as your congregation) otherwise you may place it in the offering( don’t send cash to Sydney)until the end of December.
There will also be an opportunity to give to the Christmas Bowl as a special offering at Christmas Eve and Christmas Day services.
Tear Fund Gifts
Don and Brian will be at the Tear Fund desk on Sunday for you to purchase cards that make a difference in the lives of people in developing countries.
Christmas Tree treats for Uniting Care
Please keep these coming. They are greatly appreciated by needy people in our region served by Uniting Care.
Wirra Words of the Week
“A minimum maintenance garden becomes duller and monotonous with no attention.
Wirra grows ever-more fascinating with maturity.” Wal Bushman
As we approach the warmer and drier months of the year, you will notice the grasses in the wirra displaying their seed heads and changing colour. This time of the year reminds me of harvest time on the Australian wheat farm, the reaping of the wheat and the stubble remains. It is aptly expressed in the title of Colin Thiele’s book “The Sun On The Stubble” and the quote in the prologue ….” the scenes of his boyhood swept through his mind’s eye, leapt and swayed and flickered like the changing patterns of sunlight on the stubble…”. Both the lemon grass (Cymbopogon ambiguus) and kangaroo grass(Themeda triandra) are well represented in the wirra. As you watch the changing hues on the grasses in the wirra, may you be transported back to those simple childhood memories this Christmas and summer season. Joy Stewart
