Newsletter for Sunday 12th August 2018

Sunday 12 August 2018
Greetings and welcome to this week’s newsletter

A Note from Linda
This week, at 9.30am and 6pm we’ll continue on with our theme (Jesus: Bread of Life) and we will share Communion together. Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty. (John 6:35) Jesus is our ‘anytime food’ who we can turn to everyday!
Blessings, Linda

Prayer Guide
Three weeks ago, our Church Council called us to prayer for 40 days. This is in response to the Uniting Church Assembly decision to hold two views on marriage. As we pray for our church we are also growing in our own personal prayer lives. We hope you are finding the prayer guide helpful. If you missed out, there are hard copies available at the church entry.
The Uniting Church has also released a FAQ for those who have questions: https://assembly.uca.org.au/marriage-faq

Save The Date! introducing… Threads!
On Tuesday 4th September at 12.30 you are invited to come and hear about a new activity we are going to try, called ‘Threads’. This is another way to connect with our community, this time by teaching and encouraging people who want to learn how to knit or crochet. Our hope is that we’ll gather those who want to encourage each other in their work, who might like to work on a joint project or two. Our main aim is to make new connections and build relationships in our community. Therefore we will meet in a public place – the café across the road. So, are you a knitter or a crocheter? Do you like to stitch? Or, have you always wanted to give it a go? Come and hear more about our ideas and have a say about when and how often we’ll meet.
For more information and to RSVP, please contact Sharyn or Linda.

Finance Update
I am pleased to advise that over the past 12 months we have seen an improvement in the overall financial position of the Athelstone Uniting Church, with a 16% increase in our overall income. During this period, we have transitioned from having a full time to a 0.8FTE minister (from a stipend perspective), increased the revenue from hiring of our facilities and had an increase in giving from within our congregation.
Whilst our balance sheet position during this period has decreased from $52,140 to $46,592 we have spent $18,912 on necessary maintenance and improvements and maintenance at the manse as well as a further $10,203 on maintenance to the church.
We have also been able to clear our arrears of $4,673 with the Community Outreach Mission Network (COMN) and have recently applied for a grant of $1,000 from the COMN to support our Spirited Sunday events.
Whilst we should not be complacent regarding our improving financial position, we can continue forward with confidence in being able to fulfil what God is calling us to do in Athelstone and beyond.
Glen Luestner, Treasurer

What a wonderful excitement there was on deck as families arrived and expressed how much they missed us over the long break! With some families moving to new homes and new families arriving it was a busy morning but everyone enjoyed the “campfire” theme and the special treats ! Maybe you would like to join us in this amazing outreach to our local community. All offers are welcome and will help our regular team members take a break now and then.

A Stitch in Time
We have had a request from a Stay and Play parent to purchase a smock and a library bag. If there is anyone who likes sewing and would like to make several smocks or library bags, we could offer them to parents for a small cost perhaps as a fundraiser. Contact Joy Stewart if you are interested in this task.

Wirra Words of the Week
Like fences, walls can be for keeping children safe, but they can also become creative usable spaces. Vertical surfaces are beneficial for children in developing fine and gross motor skills. Shoulder/elbow stability, wrist extension, midline crossing and visual attention are all enhanced on a vertical surface and provide young children with important skills for future writing experiences. At Stay and Play, the addition of a chalk board to the wall in the nook has provided a focal point for children to express themselves visually as well interacting with adults about the theme for the day. The wall and the path, leading to the office, is another space for children to interact and try a range of sensory experiences using chalk, water, paper, plastic and contact. Joy Stewart
