Sunday, 12th November 2017
Greetings and welcome to this week’s newsletter.
A Note from Linda
As we draw close to the end of our Journey of Worship series, we will focus this week on the sacrament of Communion. This is that special time when, once a month, we share in this sacrament – a visible sign of God’s grace. As Paul Colman says in his song, “Welcome to the banquet table!”
Looking ahead, we have just one more week left of this Worship series and then we will begin the Advent journey towards Christmas(!). This will begin on Sunday 26th November with a focus on Christmas music set amongst the Christmas trees and we’ll be joined by the Voices of Praise singing group. Our theme for December, and in particular, for our Christmas services, is “Unwrapping Joy”. This has been partly inspired by a new study written by local Uniting Church minister, Benji Callen. You might like to use this study for your personal devotions or with your small group. (It doesn’t need to coincide with the Sundays in December and can easily continue on in to the new year!) Please let Sharyn or I know if you’d like us to order a copy for you from Mediacom (cost is from $9 to $12).
Thank you so much to everyone who supported my sausage sizzle last Sunday.
We had a lovely day and raised $760 for Breast Cancer Network Australia. Thank you. Melissa
Thanks from Joy & Dean
It is with heartfelt thanks that we wish to express our gratitude to you the people of the Athelstone Uniting Church for your enormous help to Joy and me at this time. Your love and care has been shown in so many ways.
There has been meals, cards, visits, phone calls and transport. When you combine all that with the backup of prayer through the prayer chain that Brenton has organised along with the transport roster, we are overwhelmed with your love. Thanks seems so inadequate but we certainly mean it. Love Joy and Dean.
Join the Inner Wheel of Tea Tree Gully for a morning of musical entertainment on November 16th at 10:00am at Athelstone Uniting Church. Featuring Students from Golden Grove Primary School and Terry Nicholas. A sumptuous morning tea will be served with proceeds to Alzheimer’s Australia SA. $15 each.
Make up a table of 6. Everyone welcome. For more information speak to Jayne Nicholas.
Have you lost your glasses? – Found in the chapel, a pair of ladies spectacles with a dark frame. They are on Sharyn’s desk in the reception area ready for pick up.
We have been gifted with several of Pam Silby’s hand-made quilts by her family. We would like to use them in a way Pam would have wanted, so if you have a good idea please chat to Linda or Di Curtis with your thoughts, or email Sharyn.
ToFs will be this Tuesday (Nov 14th) at 2 pm and all ladies are asked to bring brightly wrapped toffees to decorate our entry for the Christmas Tree Festival. Any questions contact Ros or Jenny
News from Church Council
Ø Christmas Services Two weeks ago we announced that church council had made a decision regarding the Christmas services that will be held this year. As Christmas Eve was a Sunday and there was concern that 4 services in 2 days would be too much of a burden on both Linda and the worship team to run, and so we decided to not hold the 11pm Christmas eve service this year. However, since that announcement we have had significant feedback that there are a large number of people that are upset by our decision and wish for the 11pm service to go ahead. So much so, that some have even volunteered to be involved in planning and leading worship. Church council has discussed this and is very willing to support the 11pm Christmas Eve service being held, in addition to the other 3 services. We would like to apologise for those who felt disappointed and hurt by our decision. We think that this is an excellent opportunity to encourage a stronger partnership with the young adults who have volunteered to help lead worship, as well as offering the community four opportunities to celebrate Christmas at Athelstone Uniting.
Ø AGM Our AGM will be held on Sunday the 19th of November at 10:45am. Please continue to consider whom you would like to nominate for Chairperson and Secretary of the Congregation, as well as the 5 positions on Church Council. Nominations are due to Victoria by Wednesday the 8th of November.

A Note/Request from Joy
If anyone has old Christmas cards (preferably with personal names and messages cut off), I would be very grateful for them for the Christmas Tree Festival. A HUGE thank you to Deb for helping Bruce and I to pack up today. Another very successful morning with 15 children making gorgeous trees for our Christmas Tree Festival entry.
It was also a great bonus to have Rachel McCaskill from Campbelltown Council with us this morning. She spent quality time talking to carers about Stay and Play and general community matters.
