Newsletter for Sunday 18th February 2018

Sunday, 18th February 2018

Greetings and welcome to this week’s newsletter

A Note from Linda
Did you know that we have entered the season of Lent?  For many, this season has represented the 40 days that Jesus spent in the Wilderness.  It is a time when many give something up as a spiritual discipline, a form of fasting, to remember what Jesus went through.
This year, I’d like to encourage you to see it as a time of picking something up.  What can you do to help you grow in your relationship with Jesus?
Perhaps it’s a time to Give Thanks – each day, look for things to be thankful for.  Or you might find it helpful to
Keep Silence – find a time each day to be still and quiet and simply listen, focusing on the name of Jesus.
You might like to Read and Reflect – pick up a new book or devotion about Jesus, or join a small group.
You might like to enrich your Prayer life – take time out each day to pray, or begin a journal.
There are many different approaches to prayer. Or you might like to Act – do something as your response to what Jesus has done for you, such as supporting the LentEvent.
Let me know if you would like more ideas on what you could pick up this Lent.  I encourage you to try something that is life-giving and that will help you in your journey with Jesus.
Join us this Sunday, as we commission our Church Council for 2018, as well as commissioning us, the Congregation to what God is calling us to for the year ahead.
Blessings, Linda

Please note that Linda’s ministry days are Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays.   It’s always a good idea to call ahead if you’re planning to pop in to the church office to see her.

Sounds of Silence Service
The evening service on Sunday 25 February at 6 pm will be led by the Sounds of Silence team.  Centred on the theme “Out of Loss there is Opportunity”, the service will feature music, reflections, poetry and a time of listening.
Come and join us!
Lent Event  2018 – Faith in Action
“Faith in Action”  is the Lent Event theme for this year.
Through Lent Event we will be championing rights for women, helping to overcome poverty and standing by our Pacific neighbours in their fight to save their island homes.
These are our Partners in Mission in the Pacific region for whom daily life is often a struggle for survival.  Among them is the Uniting Church of Kiribati whom we are supporting through our Clean Water project and churches in places like Tuvalu, Fiji and Papua New Guinea.
Let’s discover together during Lent how we can live simply, and act together for change.
Starting today we will be distributing stickers that you can put around a jar or tin in which to place what you save during Lent.  These will be received at our morning worship on Palm Sunday when there will be a special offering for Lent Event.   In addition there are Lent Event envelopes that you can use on Palm Sunday.

Church Office – will be staffed Tuesdays & Wednesdays (9.30-12.30) for the next five weeks, while Sharyn is on sick leave.

Booking Church – the diary of bookings is available on the admin desk for anyone thinking about available times for an event, as is a message book if you need to contact admin staff and volunteers.  If you make a booking don’t forget to write it in the diary.
If you borrow items e.g. tables, chairs etc please write the details in the diary – it is good to know where “they” have gone!   If you are using part of the building, check the lights, fans, heaters are turned off and the facility is secure when you leave.

Letter received from Uniting Communities
Thank you for your contribution to our 2017 Christmas appeal.  Please pass on our thanks to your congregation for their generosity.  Your support is greatly appreciated by all the staff and volunteers at Eastern Services.
The generous financial support and food donations we received enabled us to distribute food hampers and food vouchers to 180 individuals and families, as well as providing toys for 100 children.
Throughout the year we are able to help many clients who come to us for assistance.  During 2017 there was a 33% increase in the number of Emergency Relief services we provided, compared to the previous year.  Without the generosity of our benefactors we would be unable to maintain the level of service we are able to offer to so many in our community who are struggling to make ends meet.

Stay and Play Playgroup
Come and join us with your preschoolers and babies on alternate Tuesdays
(even weeks of school term) from 10:00 am to 11:30 am at Athelstone Uniting Church, corner Fox Avenue & Kantilla Drive
