Newsletter for Sunday 18th March 2018

Sunday 18th March 2018

Greetings and welcome to this week’s newsletter
A Note from Linda
We are in the fifth week of the season of Lent, with Holy Week fast approaching!  I’ve been inviting you to consider picking something up – something that will help you grow in your journey as a Christian disciple.  In the last 3 weeks I have suggested to be Thankful, to Act and to Keep Silence.
Here’s another thing you might like to try:  Pray! How is your prayer life? Are you someone who needs the discipline of a regular time each day to spend time with God or do you have an ongoing dialogue with God – or perhaps a combination of both?  If you are new to prayer try this acronym: TSP. T = Thank you – give thanks and praise to God for the big things and the small things.  S = Sorry – say sorry for those things you’ve done or not done that can affect your relationship with God.  P = Please – ask for the things that are on your heart, for yourself, your family, our church family and the world.  As Easter approaches I invite you to pray especially for this significant time in the church calendar:  That people will accept our invitations to come to one of our services and hear the Good News and that each of us will draw closer to Jesus and to each other.
Over the next few months we will be gradually implementing some new ideas on Sunday evenings. We’re keen to try out a variety of ways to reach out to people. The first ‘new idea’ will be a Prayer Walk on Sunday 25th March from 6pm.  We’ll meet at Church, dedicate our LentEvent Offering, then head off towards The Rezz.  On the way, we’ll stop at several locations along Gorge Road and pray.  Once at The Rezz we’ll have a meal or a cuppa together, before making the walk back in our own time.  Come and join us as we pray for our community.
Blessings, Linda

Lent Event 2018 – Equality for Women
Across the Pacific women play a central role in their families, communities and local church.
But women also face many challenges, including lack of access to economic resources, a limited role in community decision making and vulnerability to gender based violence.
It is also true that the Church in the Pacific is at the cutting edge of the push for liberty and equality for women and girls.
Lent Event gives us the opportunity to join with them in giving women the tools to take their place as equal partners with men in reaching their leadership potential.
Our gifts for Lent Event will be received as an additional offering at our services on Palm Sunday (March 25)

Rosters for April, May and June
These have been sent out electronically, but if you require a ‘hard’ copy, see Gus Robin.

Passover??  We’ve all heard of it, but do you know how it is done now?
Join us on Maundy Thursday evening (March 29th) to find out and share a banquet!  The early church understood the ministry of Jesus and their own ministry in the light of the Passover ritual.  Modern Jews understand their national identity by it still.  This is a chance to enjoy fellowship and enrich your understanding at the same time.  There is no charge, but you need to reserve your place for catering purposes.  Donations towards the cost of providing the Jewish banquet menu will be happily received; any profit will be directed towards Lenten care projects.
Contact Dean or Nola Pearce to get your name on the list – numbers will be limited.Phone or text Nola 0427995799 or Dean 0451340941

Basketball Winter Season registrations now open
SA Church Basketball has returned to the Northern Suburbs for the first time in years, running both Senior and Junior Competitions on a Saturday Afternoon. Opportunities will be available for teams from Under 8’s through to senior men’s and women’s competitions. The 2018 Winter Season kicks off on Saturday 7th April. If you are interested in playing please let Linda know. We can either connect you with another club in the area, or if there is enough interest, form our own team.

Stay and Play Playgroup
DATES for 2018:
Term 1 – 20th March, 3rd April
Term 2 – 8th May, 22nd May, 5th June

Several of our regular team helpers will be absent in Term 2 for 19th June and 3rd July.  With a FULL ENROLMENT of 25 children, it is imperative for safety of children as well as our remaining helpers, that we have sufficient helpers to move furniture, cut fruit, wash dishes and supervise children. We cannot operate safely with less than 6 team members so please come and join the team “on deck” and explore your role at Stay and Play. You will be very welcome between 9.00am and 12 noon.  Police checks can be arranged through the office.

Packing Day in June
After an uncertain start, Packing Day is happening again this year.
We will be collecting, sorting and packing on Sunday 3rd, Monday 4th and the morning of Tuesday 5th June.
Athelstone will again be packing for 4 Northern Territory coastal communities so the majority of our requirements will be summer weight clothing.   However – Men’s, Girls’ and Boys’ jeans and slacks will be suitable.
Also light weight jumpers and cardigans for all ages and gender would be appropriate.
Other items that can be collected include:
Beanies for all ages.  Manchester (cotton rugs; not heavy woollen blankets or dunas) and Books, sewing aids, toys, toiletries, Good News bibles
Detailed requirements of each of the communities will be on the Noticeboard at the rear of the Church.
We will also collect items for the Old Timers Fete in Alice Springs.   Items for the fete must be excellent quality – new handmade or manufactured.
Goods can be dropped at the church on the afternoon of Sunday June 3rd 12 – 4pm and Monday 4th in the morning.
If you are able to help at the church on any of the days ie Sunday, Monday and Tuesday morning please let me know.
Pass the word around to your friends and families for donations, in particular lighter weight garments and plenty of menswear.
Many Thanks                                    Jayne Nicholas (0418 836 266)

Yarn Bombers Unite
Before Easter, we hope to complete the stobie pole in the wirra.
Next, we will look at recycling the strips that were used for the “fish” tree project in the view of covering the railing along the front steps.  This will provide a base for the Spring theme of “Blue Skies and Butterflies”.
Late in the year we will be creating angels to share around the community in readiness for Christmas.
If you would like to get involved in any, or all of these projects (or would like to learn how to knit or crochet) speak to Linda, Joy or Sharyn.

Dernancourt Uniting Church 50th Anniversary Celebrations – Sun 27 May 2018
10am Worship service  – Guest Preacher Rev. Rod Dyson

Electronic Giving – As disciples we give as an expression of our thankfulness for what God has done and is doing in our lives. We give as one way of contributing towards and investing in Christ’s ministry and mission through our local and the wider church. Electronic giving is a way of making giving a little easier – easier to remember – and easier for those times when you’re away. Pray about how much you wish to give and how often (2 Cor 9:7), then set up regular payments, and it’s done! Application forms are available on the table in the Church foyer or speak to the Treasurer Glen Luestner for more information.
