Sunday 24th February 2019
Greetings and welcome to this week’s newsletter
A Note from Linda
This week, we will have special guests come and share with us in the service. You might remember that last year, a reasonably large group from Teen Challenge came to join us for worship one Sunday morning. Well, they’re returning and this time – we’ll get to hear from them! Teen Challenge are passionate about helping people break free from their addictions. Their mission statement is ‘to powerfully influence troubled youth to reach their full potential’.
Next week we will begin our Being Disciples series, based on the book by the same name by Rowan Williams. We will also celebrate with Marie Bartsch as we formally welcome her to our church through a Re-affirmation of Baptism.
Coming Sunday evenings at Athelstone Uniting Church
24 February – 6pm – Prayer Walk
3 March – 6pm – intimate communion service in the Chapel
10 March – 6pm – intimate service in the Chapel
All are welcome to any of our Sunday evening activities, and as usual are welcome to join us for dinner or a cuppa each Sunday night at The Rezz after our service.
Please note that this Sunday will be Rev Ian Lohmeyer’s final service at Dernancourt Uniting Church. Ian is retiring. Please keep Ian and the Dernancourt congregation in your prayers.
Quilt – Silent Auction
A little over a year ago – Pam Silby’s family donated a number of quilts to the church, we have been pondering how best to use them. You will notice that two colourful ones are on show in the church administration area and another colourful quilt hanging in the main foyer. It is a lovely way to remember Pam.
It has been decided to hold a Silent Auction for the remainder of the quilts including, as well, several banners and table runners. Proceeds will go to Pastoral Care as this ministry was dear to Pam’s heart.
Please note that there will be a display of these items in the church again this Sunday 24th February, closing at 11.00am. Each item will have a note attached with the description, valuation and reserve price, please enter your bid and wait with excitement for the telephone call informing you of success! Sharyn
Looking ahead to Lent
During Lent (commencing in March) our preaching series will follow the book “Being Disciples” by Rowan Williams. All are invited to join in further by reading the book as part of your own personal devotions or joining a small group to unpack it together. An order form and more information will be available in next week’s newsletter. Existing small groups are invited to use the book for your studies. Linda will also be hosting a new small group to read this book together. Alternately, there will be a Lent Event bible study available which can also be used by small groups.
We will be hosting the next gathering of the Community Outreach Mission Network on Tuesday 26 February at 6.15pm. All are welcome. Bring along a plate of savoury or sweet to share for dinner. The gathering includes a shared meal, worship, and a meeting where we will hear about what God has been up to through the ministries of the congregations in our network. This includes presentations from those who received network grants.
“If you would like to help with this event by serving in the kitchen, please chat to Victoria Pederick (0488391007).”
Triple Cs – Next gathering is planned for March 13th
Venue and Time to be announced, but consider car pooling meanwhile. Thanks again for the support.
Are you interested in learning more about a NEW Small group!
Linda invites you to join her for a Cuppa at the Manse on Wednesday 27th February at 7.30pm. The focus of discussion will be formation of a new short-term small group for the 6 weeks of Lent, commencing Wednesday
6th March – 10th April. Resource is “Being Disciples” written by Rowan Williams and will cost $13.00.
Dr Williams is acknowledged internationally as an outstanding theological writer, scholar and teacher. He is the former Archbishop of Canterbury.

The books are being ordered through the office, please let Sharyn know if you would like one or it may be that you are unable to attend a group, but would like to “follow along” by reading the book.

Packing Day – Save the Date, Start Collecting!
Once again the Athelstone Uniting Church is co-ordinating the packing of goods for indigenous communities in northern and central Australia.
Please save the dates: Sunday June 2nd and Monday June 3rd
This event is a chance for our church community to engage in some fellowship and I would love to have you join us in the camaraderie of the Packing Day.
As in previous years we are collecting for the communities north of Darwin so require clothing and manchester that would be suitable for these tropical destinations.
Attached to the Newsletter is a flyer detailing the goods required. Along with used goods, there are some new items that could be purchased – underwear, stationery, toiletries.
If you have any questions please ask Jayne Nicholas.
Letter received from Uniting Communities (Dated 18th February)
Thank you for your contribution to our 2018 Christmas Appeal. The support of your church is greatly appreciated by all the staff and volunteers at Easter Services.
The generous financial support and food donations we received enabled us to distribute food hampers and food vouchers to 170 individuals and families, as well as providing toys for 90 children.
The demand for our services continues to increase. Without the generosity of our benefactors we would be unable to maintain the level of service we are able to offer to so many in our community who are struggling to make ends meet.
Electronic Giving – Forms are available or speak to Treasurer Glen Luestner for more information.
