Sunday 24 June 2018
Greetings and welcome to this week’s newsletter

A Note from Linda
This week we welcome Mike Rayson at our 9.30am worship service! The Rev’d Mike Rayson is a United Methodist Minister, serving Nameoki United Methodist Church in Granite City, Illinois (USA) as their Senior Pastor. Originally from Australia, Mike immigrated to the United States in 2005. His music has won countless awards and accolades across the globe.
We also welcome Mike’s family along with another family from his home church who are visiting Australia. We look forward to meeting them all over lunch. (Don’t forget to bring a plate of savoury or dessert to share!)

Well Done and Thank You to our 9am worship team who have taken on the challenge of leading this week’s Presbytery & Synod meeting in worship (June 22-23). Thanks especially to Di Curtis for coordinating this for us.

I have now completed a course which I was attending on Thursdays. Therefore, my available days from this coming week onwards will be: Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Sunday. During the week, I spend some of my time at the church office, some out visiting and at meetings, and some working from my study at the manse. If you need to contact me, you can reach me on my mobile: 0458-500-656. I am just a phone call away.

Looking ahead, the Gospel readings from July 29 through to August 19 all speak of bread. So, I’m keen to make Bread a focus during that time. Are you a baker? Do you have stories about bread to share? Would like to be involved in providing some bready goodness during this time? If so, please let me know in the next week or so.
Blessings, Linda

Prayer Walk Tonight
This Sunday evening we’ll head off on our monthly Prayer Walk. This is an opportunity to pray for our community. We’ll meet at 6pm at The Rezz carpark, near the Bistro entrance and will go for a gentle walk around the walking track of Thorndon Park. All welcome. Please come dressed for the weather conditions. For more information, give Linda a call (0458-500-656)

Uniting Church Assembly – July 8-14
For many weeks now, we have been praying for the upcoming Uniting Church Assembly meeting to be held in July. (The Assembly is the national council of our Church and has responsibility in matters of doctrine, worship, government and discipline, sets national policy and promotes the Church’s mission in the world.) Among a number of important matters on the agenda, are Reports and Proposals on Marriage and Same-Gender Relationships. Briefly, this includes a Proposal to adopt a new policy statement on marriage between two people to live together for life. The Proposal includes freedom of conscience for Ministers to accept (or decline) requests to celebrate same-gender marriages and for Congregations to permit or refuse the use of their property for the use of same-gender weddings. Across the breadth of the Uniting Church, this has been received in many different ways, with some folk welcoming proposed changes, some who are deeply concerned and some who are still discerning what Christ is asking of his Church. Please consider reading the papers prayerfully (https://uniting.church/) and contact Linda if you have any questions. Please continue to pray for the elected members at the upcoming Assembly and incoming President Deidre Palmer.

UnitingWomen – Brisbane – September 27-30
We now have enough interest to plan for a group of women to go the UnitingWomen 2018 conference. This will be a time for Christian women of all ages to gather, grow and be inspired.
Please contact Linda by Sunday July 1 if you are definitely interested in joining us so that we can arrange travel and accommodation. More information about the conference here:  https://unitingwomen.org.au/
Please note that Uniting Church SA is offering bursaries to help with expenses. Info here: http://sa.uca.org.au/nurture
Prayer Requests
Can we support you in prayer? Here’s how:
Prayer Chain – send an email to, or call Brenton Summers, who will pass your prayer request on to a group of people who faithfully pray in response to Prayer Chain emails.
Confidential Prayers – if the issue is more personal you are invited to contact Linda for individual prayer
or one the members of the Pastoral Care Oversight team (Brenton Summers, Ann Brown, Bob Stevenson and Linda). All prayer requests going to the team will be kept strictly confidential within this team.
Prayers for Others (Sunday Worship) – Linda provides our Worship Leaders with prayer points as appropriate. Prayer points are also sourced from the Prayer Chain. If you have something you would like to be included in Prayers for Others, please contact Linda.
We are all called to pray for one another, and so we are all encouraged to offer to pray for, or with others, especially if they share a concern with you. (James 5:13-16)

Uniting Communities Eastern Services
The cold winter months are with us and for many years now, the Athelstone UC congregation have been great supporters of the Uniting Communities Eastern Services office at Beulah Park by providing tinned food for distribution for those in need.  Suitable food items include tins and packets of soup, “chunky” type meals, baked beans, spaghetti and other tinned meals; cereals, pasta and pasta sauce, and tinned vegetables.
Please place any items on the table inside the Church and I will ensure that they are collected and taken to the Uniting Communities office.                                       Thanks,   Brenton Summers
