Newsletter for Sunday 26th November 2017

Sunday, 26th November 2017
Greetings and welcome to this week’s newsletter.
A Note from Linda
Excitement is building here at church, as each day, more and more Christmas trees and decorations appear.   I hope that you are planning to come to the Christmas Tree Festival sometime this week.   With 67 trees registered, it is going to be amazing.
On Sunday we’ll be worshipping amongst the Christmas trees, with lots of Christmassy music.   It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas!
Last week we finished the Journey of Worship series.  I hope you enjoyed Malcolm Gordon’s teaching and our own reflections each week. If you missed a week and are interested in catching up, the DVD is now available to borrow. Contact Sharyn for more information.
We now have a number of the “Unwrapping Joy” study books available for $12.00. Please contact Sharyn or I if you would like a copy.
Blessings,  Linda
ToFs  Christmas  Lunch
Please join us on Tuesday Dec 5th at 12.30pm for lunch at The Rezz.  Everyone is welcome, particularly close friends, partners and spouses.   Let Jenny or Ros know if you’re coming.
Thank you for your company and support throughout 2017 as we’ve shared with each other.
Christmas Blessings,  Jenny and Ros
Gifts that express Compassion –  Three ways of  sharing  with those less fortunate than us.
This year during the Advent/Christmas season at AUC we will be emphasising 3 ways of expressing our care for those who have deep needs both within our local communities and in the wider world community:

  • You will already have noticed the Christmas tree at the church entrance with symbols suggesting “Christmas Treats” to purchase for the Christmas appeal of Uniting Communities Eastern Services.
Just remove one or more of the symbols from the tree, buy your gift and place it under the tree. Envelopes are also available in which you may place monetary donations.

  • In giving to the Christmas Bowl Appeal we celebrate God’s gift to us in the birth of Jesus as we provide food for the hungry, heal the sick, and support those who are the victims of conflict and disaster.
Again this year we will be providing Bowl envelopes in which you may place your donation and either forward it to Act for Peace or place it in the offering bags. A special offering at our Christmas services is another way to give to the Bowl.

  • Then there’s Tear Fund’s Useful Gifts Catalogue which has helped transform our giving to loved ones and friends at Christmas through the purchase of perhaps a goat, or a toilet, or seeds for a village garden in a poor community.
We then send loved ones a card to let them know that we have involved them in action that helps people to be released from poverty. Get your catalogues and cards from Don and Brian from next Sunday.

Whichever way we choose to celebrate this special time through acts of compassion and caring we will be serving  Christ who meets us in our neighbors in need.

DATES for 2017  –  Term 4              5th December
Our last Stay and Play for 2017 will be held at the Fox Avenue Reserve, picnic style.  With increasing families enjoying the fortnightly programme, we would really appreciate some more helpers to move furniture before and after the session, and help to cut up fruit and wash dishes.  Just half an hour of your time will help to support the regular team.  Please consider how you could help in 2018 and have a chat to Joy or Bruce.  Come and join the fun!
We have been gifted with several of Pam Silby’s hand-made quilts by her family.  We would like to use them in a way Pam would have wanted, so if you have a good idea please chat to Linda or Di Curtis with your thoughts, or email Sharyn
Some years ago t-shirts with the Athelstone logo were purchased;  if you would like to have one to identify yourself when you are “working” an event, check the box in the reception area.  Various sizes and colours are available
They are going for a donation of $5.00!   Please come and try on there is a mirror in the vestry and pay Sharyn.
Sunday 26 November:  No 6pm Service: we won’t be gathering as usual for worship at 6:00pm.
Please note that the 9:30am service will be set amongst the Christmas Trees, with the Voices of Praise singing group presenting Christmas music and some people will share about their favourite Carol. It’s sounding like it will be a lovely service!
