Newsletter for Sunday 2nd October 2016

Sunday 2nd October 2016

In October our meeting will be on Tuesday 11th at 2pm at the church. (Note change of date)
We will be filling shoe boxes for children overseas to receive at Christmas.
Please bring along suitable items for boys and girls aged 3 to 12 years and we will pack the boxes over a cuppa and chat.
Cash donations are also welcome to help with the cost of sending the boxes to their new homes.
All women welcome.  Jenny and Ros

Uniting Communities – Cans of Food

A big thank you goes out to the congregation of Athelstone Uniting Church for their continued generosity.   However this does not necessarily mean we have to stop and any continuing contributions will be greatly accepted.   Brenton

Shoeboxes   It is time to start packing your shoeboxes!

Remember to pack something for a child to love; to wear; to play with; for school; for personal hygiene and something special.   Brochures and boxes will be available after church from this Sunday 19th September. The collection date will be sometime in October.
I also have a request from our region’s contact person, Lynette Beck: “Please be in prayer for people who could help with processing from Oct 4 till Nov 22. We especially need at least 2 men for each shift to help with packing cartons and some of the tasks which require a bit more strength. Also, I really need people who can help as welcomers at the centre. Please consider who in your group of contacts might be suitable – 1 name with contact details would be a great blessing to me”.       If you can help in any way or need more information then please ask.   Friederike

Fete & Garage Sale – to be held this year on November 5th – 7am – 1pm

Please put this date in your diary and plan to be there and get involved in a great day of fun and sharing together.
As in other years we will have a wide range of stalls – both food and saleable items and your help on these would be appreciated.  September is traditionally “Spring Clean” time so have a sort through at home.  We are accepting saleable goods – toys, books, games, china, glassware, giftware, household goods, bric-a-brac, electrical, furniture, good quality second hand clothes – we are very grateful for all donations.  Also it’s a great time to pot up some pot plants now that the warmer weather is with us.  The Plant stall has been a great success and contributions of plants and garden accessories would be great.
Stay & Play are planning some children’s activities, on the day of the Fete & Garage Sale, among them “cook in the nook”, a “musical fence” and “bubbles” sounds like fun!!  Please start saving small plastic bottles, (spring water type) to assist with the bubble blowing.   And what about “yarn bombing the trees in the garden to brighten up the precinct?  Talk to Joy Stewart if you wish to be involved.  We could do with donations of blue, green or white yarn (ocean colours) and knitters, no technical skill required, long straight scarf type is what is needed. There is a box in the church foyer for yarn donations.
Night Owls Bowls at Payneham
For the past few years a group of bowling enthusiasts have been playing Night Owls between October and April at the Payneham Bowling Club.  If you are interested in joining a team, please contact Jeff Dry 0408 254 489.
Victor Harbor
A number of families will be holidaying together at the Adare Caravan Park, Victor Harbor, 7th to 14th January 2017.
If you would like to join them, please contact Trevor Curtis 0415 652 120 for more information.
G’day friends of Athelstone Uniting
Our writing group in September, discussed “Why do we write? What are we writing for?” while also swapping our stories for the month.  We heard a fairy tale about two siblings learning to work together despite opposing beliefs, a man in his pursuit of the American Dream, the continuation of a fishy tale and a rented unit that is hiding a secret.
If you are interested in getting involved and coming to the next meeting on Thursday 13th of October @ 7:30 in the chapel then please ring or text Matthew Barker on 0416620913.
No Friendship Club during School Holidays
Friday, 21st October 10 am – Chat & Chew.
The Church Rosters for October, November and December have been done and sent out.  If you require a hard copy, some are available in the front foyer otherwise just let me know you require one.   Thanks, Gus Robin
Financial Events
Two major financial events at Athelstone Uniting Church.
Ø  First, the Aussie BBQ and fund raiser for the Water Storage project for Kiribati raised a total of some $2,800, even though the target was only $2,500.  We will be passing this onto the World Mission Team.
Ø  Second, in response to our special Gift Sunday appeal for special giving to assist the church in cutting its budget shortfall, we are pleased to announce that, to date, we have received $9,400, and that’s on top of your normal giving.  On this basis, and with your help, we can cut in half the budget shortfall (from $20,000 to $10,000)!
