Sunday 3rd March 2019
Greetings and welcome to this week’s newsletter
A Note from Linda
This week, we will begin our Lenten series on Being Disciples – and Marie Bartsch will be formally welcomed as a member through a Re-Affirmation of Baptism. This will be a special service and I look forward to seeing you there.
As we begin this series, I invite you to reflect on how you would define what a Christian disciple is.
I encourage you to consider purchasing your own copy of ‘Being Disciples’ by Rowan Williams.
Contact Sharyn in the Office for more information.
Discussion Questions are also available to be used after reading each chapter of the Being Disciples book. There are questions in the book plus I have collated a new resource with content from Brian Ball, Dean Brook and Dean Pearce. A huge thanks to these ‘sages’ in our midst for providing us with material for us to reflect on.
Coming Sunday evenings at Athelstone Uniting Church
3 March – 6pm – intimate communion service in the Chapel
10 March – Long Weekend – no evening service

All are welcome to any of our Sunday evening activities, and as usual are welcome to join us for dinner or a cuppa each Sunday night at The Rezz after our service.
Thank you to everyone who came to the gathering on Tuesday evening. It was great to have people come from churches form as far as Yankalilla to Barmera. We heard form Diane Bury about the restructure f the Presbytery and from 6 congregations about how they are using their COMN grant money. An inspiring an informative night.
Thanks so much to all who came and help set up, lead worship, operate the tech, pack up and so on.
This Tuesday, March 5th, ToFs will be visiting Garden Grove Nursery where we can browse the plants and shop and enjoy a chat over afternoon tea. Please be at the church at 1.30pm or we’ll meet you at the Nursery at 2pm.
The address is 1150 Golden Grove Rd, Golden Grove.. Everyone is welcome. Jenny and Ros
Lent Event 2019 Build Hope – End Poverty
Next Wednesday, known as Ash Wednesday, marks the beginning of Lent for 2019- forty days of journeying with Jesus as he makes his way to the Cross. Traditionally Lent has been seen as a time to give up something we enjoy as a way of identifying with Jesus’ self- giving.
This year we want to suggest that we see it as a way of taking up a call to mission as we support the Church in Timor Leste as they serve among their people in areas such as health education, leadership training, child protection and the provision of clean water.
There are a number of suggestions as to how we may do this in the Lent Event book, ’40 days of simple living’ that we will receive next week. Then the savings we have made by living simply can be brought forward on Palm Sunday as a special offering for the people of Timor Leste.
Next Sunday we will be receiving a gift envelope, a Lent Event booklet and a sticker to place around a jar or tin in which we may place our love offering for building hope and ending poverty. Then it’s over to us !
Triple Cs – Next gathering is planned for March 13th
Venue and Time to be announced, but consider car pooling meanwhile. Thanks again for the support.

With thanks to a couple of new helpers on deck, there should be no cancellations of sessions in Term 1. However, the waiting list will be in operation for over 20 children until we continue to increase the team. “Let’s Talk Together” in 2019 and celebrate the International Year of Indigenous Languages.

SPRING FAIR – 2019
The Annual Spring Fair/Fete/Garage Sale has been held at Athelstone for many years and Church Council
is reviewing the event and looking at how it may be reinvigorated and sustained into the future.
Council is looking for a new Coordinator and/or team to lead.
If you have any thoughts and/or feel called to be involved, please contact Jeff Dry or Di Curtis.
Packing Day – Save the Date, Start Collecting!
Once again the Athelstone Uniting Church is co-ordinating the packing of goods for indigenous communities in northern and central Australia.
Please save the dates: Sunday June 2nd and Monday June 3rd
This event is a chance for our church community to engage in some fellowship and I would love to have you join us in the camaraderie of the Packing Day.
As in previous years we are collecting for the communities north of Darwin so require clothing and manchester that would be suitable for these tropical destinations.
Attached to the Newsletter is a flyer detailing the goods required. Along with used goods, there are some new items that could be purchased – underwear, stationery, toiletries.
If you have any questions please ask Jayne Nicholas.
