Newsletter for Sunday 8th April 2018

Sunday 8 April 2018

Greetings and welcome to this week’s newsletter
A Note from Linda
What a wonderful weekend of celebrations we’ve just had!  If you missed it, here’s a brief summary:
We began with a Passover Experience on Maundy Thursday.  Dean and Nola provided us with an educational evening with new experiences and lots of delicious food.
On Good Friday we had a meaningful service where we heard again the confronting story of Jesus’ death on the cross, through the gospel of John.
On Easter Sunday we gathered early at Thorndon Park with worshippers from Dernancourt and Campbelltown Uniting Churches.  We celebrated the Story from Creation to Resurrection – it was a joyful start to the day.
Then at 9.30am we gathered for our Easter celebration at Church.  Both Sunday services had a link back to Christmas as we sang Glory to God and then Joy to the World – both very appropriate!
A huge Thank You to every one who helped prepare for and lead each of these special activities.  It was a memorable and meaningful Easter.
Christ is risen! He is risen indeed!
Blessings, Linda
Prayer Walk
Our next Prayer Walk will be on Sunday evening 22nd April.  Meet at Church at 6pm, prepared with torches, jackets and walking shoes for an ‘Anzac’ walk. All welcome.
Keep your eye out for more new Sunday evening initiatives, coming soon!
Save the Date
Sounds of Silence Retreat: The Fire Within
We’ll be holding a retreat here at Church on Saturday 19 May from 3.00 to 8.00pm
Advance notice – Linda will be away
As you may know, Linda is in a 0.8FTE part-time placement with us. To make up for extra hours worked in the lead up to and during Easter, she will take some time off at the end of April, with the blessing of Church Council.
She will be away from Sunday 22nd April to Monday 30th April inclusive.
Church Office and Administrative Support Person role
Over the past 8 weeks whilst Sharyn has been on sick leave, our church office has been staffed by a dedicated group of volunteers. They have done a wonderful job and we greatly appreciate all of their efforts. Unfortunately, Sharyn’s shoulder is not healing as quickly as her physio would like and has advised Sharyn that she needs more time to recover before returning to work. In the interim, we are seeking to employ someone for the Casual Administrative Support Person role.
The successful applicant will fulfil all duties as outlined in the position description, which is available from the Chairperson (Victoria Pederick) upon request. This person will report directly to Church Council. Job sharing will be considered.
If you are interested, we invite you to apply by providing a short CV, which includes details of your skills and relevant experience, in addition to a one page cover letter outlining your reasons for applying for the position, to the Chairperson of the Church Council   ( ) by 5pm on Monday the 16th of April.
Our Church Newsletter
As from now, the newsletter will be collated and sent out on Wednesday, instead of Thursday.  So any notices to be included must reach the Church Office ( ) by 9.30 am Wednesday.
Sunday Morning Worship Meeting – Tuesday 10th April – 7.30pm – 9.00pm
The Sunday Morning Music and Worship team is meeting together this Tuesday and everyone interested is welcome to attend. (no music experience necessary)
Our goal is to continue to foster vibrant and engaging worship at the 9.30 service and we will revisit “Malcolm Gordon’s Journey of Worship” and share discussion around worship leading and putting all the elements of the service together.   For further information see Di Curtis (0419-862-606) or Linda
Easter Maundy Thursday – Passover Dinner
Did you note that at the Passover Dinner on Easter Thursday night every seat was taken. Some fifty (50) tickets were taken up prior to the night. Some fifty two (52) seats were placed around the three (3) long tables extended out from the ceremonial table. That is  one setting for every day of the year  by co-incidence. Nice!  Congratulations and thank you to Dean, Nola and your many contributors and helpers to make this special event happen.
ToFs  (Tuesdays on Fox)
Our next meeting will be on Tuesday 10th April (note the second Tuesday of the month) at 2pm when we will travel to Garden Grove Garden Centre, where we will enjoy a coffee at Café de Grove.
There is also a large nursery to explore, and a very interesting gift area in which to browse.
We will meet at the Church carpark at 130pm or feel free to make your own way there –
Address:   1150 Golden Grove Rd,  Golden Grove.
Please let Jenny or Ros know if you are intending to join us and need transport

Electronic Giving – As disciples we give as an expression of our thankfulness for what God has done and is doing in our lives. We give as one way of contributing towards and investing in Christ’s ministry and mission through our local and the wider church. Electronic giving is a way of making giving a little easier – easier to remember – and easier for those times when you’re away. Pray about how much you wish to give and how often (2 Cor 9:7), then set up regular payments, and it’s done! Application forms are available on the table in the Church foyer or speak to the Treasurer Glen Luestner for more information.

Wirra Words of the Week
“The Nook” is a shady, protected, quiet space, that has evolved as we observe how local people and the Stay and Play children use it.  In fact, even its name and signage evolved over time.  Maintaining our philosophy of using minimal resources, and with the addition of both large and small logs for sitting or a table, it has become a regularly visited space for locals to rest and chat.  Children have enjoyed a range of nature play activities with the addition of a few extra temporary props.  With the addition of a chalkboard, not only do children have an extra medium with which to engage, but it has become a place to leave appropriate messages for the local community users.  It is also one of the favoured trees for our local resident koalas, so please help by filling the water bowl if you are passing.

Packing Day in June
After an uncertain start, Packing Day is happening again this year.
We will be collecting, sorting and packing on Sunday 3rd, Monday 4th and the morning of Tuesday 5th June.
Athelstone will again be packing for 4 Northern Territory coastal communities so the majority of our requirements will be summer weight clothing.   However – Men’s, Girls’ and Boys’ jeans and slacks will be suitable.
Also light weight jumpers and cardigans for all ages and gender would be appropriate.
Other items that can be collected include:
Beanies for all ages.  Manchester (cotton rugs; not heavy woollen blankets or dunas) and Books, sewing aids, toys, toiletries, Good News bibles
Detailed requirements of each of the communities will be on the Noticeboard at the rear of the Church.
We will also collect items for the Old Timers Fete in Alice Springs.   Items for the fete must be excellent quality – new handmade or manufactured.
Goods can be dropped at the church on the afternoon of Sunday June 3rd 12 – 4pm and Monday 4th in the morning.
If you are able to help at the church on any of the days ie Sunday, Monday and Tuesday morning please let me know.
Pass the word around to your friends and families for donations, in particular lighter weight garments and plenty of menswear.
Many Thanks
