Sunday 9th September 2018
Greetings and welcome to this week’s newsletter
A Note from Linda
We had a great turn out for our first Threads gathering on Tuesday. 14 people chatted about their projects, or their desire to learn, as well as the vision for this new activity. 3 others who weren’t interested in threads, still came along, sat together and had a yarn! We are now working on when and where we’ll gather again.
This month we have been following the James readings in the Lectionary, with a focus on Christian Living.
Last week I shared a quote from US Senator Cory Booker which is so relevant to the teaching in James. Here it is again, for your reflection:
“Before you speak to me about your religion, first show it to me in how you treat other people;
Before you tell me how much you love your God, show me in how much you love all His children;
Before you preach to me of your passion for your faith, teach me about it through your compassion for your neighbours.
In the end, I’m not as interested in what you have to tell or sell as I am in how you choose to live and give.”
Please note that I will be on Study Leave from 17 September until 1 October. During this time I will participate in a Ministers’ retreat and a number of seminars. I will join a group of Athelstone UC women going to Brisbane for the UnitingWomen conference and I’ll be working on an assignment! If you are interested in joining us at UnitingWomen, please let me know as soon as possible. Blessings, Linda
After the morning service, instead of packing up the chairs as usual, we’ll need help rearranging the church with tables and chairs. Please check with Linda for details.
Our first official Messy Church is on this Sunday at 4pm! With the theme of Love your World, we’ll be having fun, exploring faith and sharing a meal together. Messy Church is church for families who may not find other forms of church appealing and who don’t yet belong to a church. Messy Church values are: Christ-centred, All-age, Creativity, Hospitality and Celebration. Please contact Linda or Meg for more info.
Kiribati Safe Water Project
Thanks to everyone who has supported the Kiribati Water Conservation Project. We are fairly certain that we have reached our target of $2,500 with a generous amount being given last Sunday.
If you still want to add to the amount already received it is not too late to do so by marking an envelope “Kirabati project” and placing it in the offering bag.
When Glen Luestner returns from overseas we will be able to announce a final figure.
Let’s make September Operation Christmas Child month!
Now is the time to start packing those shoeboxes. Lynette Beck will be sharing at church on the 16th and I will have a display/swap table set up from then on.
If you can’t put together a box, all donations whether goods or money are welcome.
Remember that we need to cover the cost of the box and a $10 fee for handling. Every little bit helps and together we can be successful. Blessings to you all, Friederike
