It came as a great surprise to me in the mid 90’s when a reference in one of my carefully crafted sermons to, the Blues Brothers, was met with blank looks from the congregation.
Released in 1980, the BB is THE “must see many times” movie of my generation. To see all those blank faces staring back at me saddened me deeply.
It held a record for the most number of cars destroyed on screen in one movie (103) until it was beaten by its sequel in 2000. It had the best movie soundtrack ever. It had the hottest love scene ever between Carrie Fisher and John Belushi. It had Cab Calloway!
How could they NOT KNOW WHAT I WAS TALKING ABOUT!
And I thought that I was being hip, cool and with it!
Perhaps that is how the early followers of Jesus felt when they talked about their experiences to their children. It’s probably why they wrote the gospels.
Each generation needs to form its own stories. But the mission remains.
